Math

PS 139 has chosen enVisionmath 2.0 which aligns with the Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics. The program incorporates both digital and print materials to combine problem-based  and visual learning  in order to deepen students’ conceptual understanding. Students engage in group work and also work independently.

Problem Solving centers around the 8 mathematical practices:

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  • Model with mathematics.
  • Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • Attend to precision.
  • Look for and make use of structure.
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Each lesson begins with a real world problem that allows children to evaluate their options, collaborate with their peers, and present solutions.

Students will have access to the enVisionmath 2.0 website which will allow them to use digital tools, watch videos to reinforce concepts, and complete online assignments.

Social Studies

PS 139 utilizes the Passport to Social Studies Program and follows the NYC K-8 Social Studies Scope and Sequence. The Passport  program incorporates civic lessons as well as units of study guided by essential questions, designed to focus on important concepts related to the unit. The units of study are supported by documents, trade books, and primary sources that challenge students to think like historians, raise questions, think critically, consider many perspectives, make decisions, and analyze historical events. These real world-skills aid students in becoming active members of a  democracy and a global community.

Amplify Science

Science

In grades K-5 we bring real-world science concepts to life with our Amplify Science curriculum by blending digital experiences with hands-on lessons that inspire students to think like scientists and engineers and learn by exploring phenomena.  The Amplify curriculum meets 100% of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  The NYC Scope and Sequence (also aligned to the NGSS) will be used in tandem with the Amplify program to ensure all standards are addressed.

Literacy

Beginning in September 2021, PS 139 will adopt the HMH Into Reading program schoolwide. This new program will allow for continuity of instruction in both reading and writing across all grade levels. The program is aligned with the Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA. HMH Into Reading includes guided reading, skill and strategy lessons, English language development and independent literacy activities. Both informal and formal assessments throughout the modules allow teachers to tailor instruction for all learners. Students will also have access to a library of trade books that serve to connect each module and topic and bridges reading and writing instruction. Writing is connected to the reading module, and incorporates independent writing, peer review, needs based small groups, and one-on-one conferences with the teacher.

Grades K-2 will incorporate the Wilson Fundations® program into daily reading lessons. This is a comprehensive program that emphasizes:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics/word study
  • High frequency word study
  • Reading Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension strategies
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling

Progress monitoring is built into Fundations. This allows struggling students to be identified early and intervention to begin. Fundations helps English language learners by teaching them the skills and strategies they need to be successful in learning to read and write in English.
